Over the holidays I took my first real crack at “vibe coding” a project I’d wanted to build for a while: a webapp that lets you know if San Francisco’s Muni Metro subway is working or not.
Using Claude Code, I had it build an image classifier and a script that scrapes the live snapshot image that Muni uploads to the web. After labeling hundreds of images I trained a model to predict the overall status based on those snapshots. Next I had Claude write some scripts to docker-ize a background task and an API server, as well as a script to deploy both to Google Cloud Run.
What I didn’t use AI for was creating the cute little graphics; those are the work of a local illustrator I hired for the project. Some things still need a human touch.
