The wild murals of Erie Street

December 12th, 2015

Tucked behind a series of warehouses and repair shops by the old Central Freeway viaduct is Erie Street. Despite the name, it’s actually a small alley that’s only a block and a half long. But it’s also home to some of the more interesting murals in the city. Maybe one day they’ll become as increasingly stale — and frankly, conservative — as the murals approved by the local art groups, but for now the Erie Street murals still have a wild, almost psychedelic sensibility about them.

Check out some of my favorites below. Click any photo for a larger version.

New murals on Dolores St.

March 20th, 2015

Across from Dolores Park there’s a Christian Science church that’s been shuttered for a number of years. Recently a developer wanted to turn it into housing, but so far that hasn’t happened.

Instead it got boarded up, and now those boards have been filled with some spiffy new murals by fnnch, Analog Monsters, MaxEhrman and others.

Here’s a few new pieces that caught my eye in the always-changing set of murals in Clarion Alley:

Space reserved for mural

February 12th, 2014

New mural

This space is reserved...

A mural recently appeared on the side of the former Andalu space at 16th and Guerrero. Apparently there’s more to come, as a large sign proclaims that the space is “reserved.” Stay tuned for further updates as the mural progresses.

UPDATE: A new piece of the mural has appeared.

UPDATE, part 2: Despite being aggressively tagged over in the past few days, the mural sprung back into action with more cutesy characters.

UPDATE, part 3: Well, that didn’t last.

Piece of human shit ruins Lone Star Swan mural

Lone Star Swan mural is ruined

Lately Clarion Alley has been hit by wave after wave of vandalism. Yes, this is why we can’t have nice things.

I’ve been curious as to how long it’d take before the wonderful Lone Star Swan mural would get defaced, and unfortunately I now have the answer. Over the past few days, some piece of human shit came in and spray painted their fucking tag all over the entire mural.

Taggers are like dogs that use spray paint to mark their territory instead of urine. At least piss washes off, a fact that places taggers a few steps below dogs in the intelligence ladder.

If you taggers insist on ruining art, at least have the decency to replace it with something meaningful. Perhaps a new piece, or some kind of social commentary? For fuck’s sake, it’s not that hard to add value instead of just shitting on other people’s work. Grow up.

Ninja Turtle battles gentrification

June 26th, 2012

Anti-gentrificaiton TMNT

This new mini-piece on Clarion Alley shows Raphael of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles complaining about gentrification to a man with a rather unusual tongue condition.

Gentrification, according to this mural, is embodied by ice cream, condos, and “another boutique.” Who knew that food, shelter, and retail were to blame? Apparently can battle gentrification by starving ourselves and sleeping on the street — it’s that simple!

Of course, Raphael has more reason to complain than the rest of us; the city has been busily ripping out his home (i.e. the sewers) and replacing them with newer sewers, which one assumes are not protected by rent control.

New mural coming along at 17th and Capp

17th & Capp Mural

17th & Capp Mural

For the past few weeks, the building on the corner of 17th and Capp (across from Uptown) has been getting muralized. Surprisingly it hasn’t been tagged (yet.)

While it’s not finished, it’s nice to see some color at a corner that’s more known for a different type of “color,” i.e. the kind where a Royal Gate-drinking hobo pees on your shoes.

Does BoingBoing coverage confirm San Francisco street art no longer hip?

July 22nd, 2011

Mural at 19th and Mission

There was a time when BoingBoing was an underground zine, and being covered in its pages meant you were an up-and-coming phenomenon. Now that BoingBoing is the 11th most popular blog on the internet, your grandmother is probably reading it. Nothing diminishes the cool factor more quickly than when uncool people know about it.

With this in mind, has street art in San Francisco finally jumped the shark into non-hip status with recent coverage of the superhero mural at 19th and Mission?

Or will local street art survive such deserved (but unnecessary) praise and maintain its local cred?

Sometimes I walk through Clarion Alley just to look. It’s not that I don’t want to take photos of the murals, it’s just that I don’t want to be so cliche. But today I decided to take some photos in spite of my own unoriginality, and you’re looking at the result.

These are the newest murals, etc. that caught my attention.

Guess who’s back?

June 21st, 2011

No, not Eminem. Pica Pica’s tiger! Yes, a new mural featuring a big orange tiger has shown up on the side of Pica Pica sometime over the weekend.
