It seems like just yesterday that The Bay Lights first illuminated San Francisco’s Bay Bridge. But it wasn’t yesterday; it was thirteen years ago. Crazy, right?
Since the original temporary installation was first switched on, it was removed and replaced with a more permanent version that lasted about a decade. As of Friday evening the third version was officially lit for the first time.
The unveiling happened to coincide with an unusually hot March day, with temperatures in the low to mid 80 degree range. This brought large crowds to the waterfront for the evening. I took the above photos and videos from along Pier 1, which is just off the beaten path enough to avoid the masses.
With any luck this bigger and brighter version of The Bay Lights should last until 2036, give or take.
