On Cinema’s live Oscar Special is this Sunday, and it promises to be The Last Oscar Special. So in honor of the series finale of On Cinema (or at least, until they inevitably announce a reunion immediately afterwards), I’ve launched a new website with all the movies rated on the show over the past 16 seasons: HowManyBags.com
For those not in the know, show host Tim “New” Heidecker and frequent guest Gregg Turkington rate movies on a scale of one to five bags of popcorn, except when they forget, or use a different rating system, or didn’t get around to seeing the movie.
The ratings are utterly worthless anyway as nearly every movie gets awarded the “coveted” five bags of popcorn, along with sodas and perhaps a collector’s item.
I created this website initially to preserve these invaluable ratings as they were recently removed from this Wikipedia page. Something about how it was against Wikipedia’s rules, I guess.
The source code for How Many Bags is on GitHub, available under the same open source license as Wikipedia itself. Contributions are welcome; the tech stack is a fairly trivial Jekyll template with Tailwind for styling. The ratings data is stored in this JSON file.
But enough talk about bits and bytes — I’ve got the Oscar Fever!
