The noxious odor of burning gasoline filled the cold winter air tonight in the area around 16th. and Guerrero streets in San Francisco’s Mission District in the aftermath of the explosion of a gas station’s underground tank.
According to Mission Local the explosion occurred just after 4:30 PM.
The Shell gas station had been closed in recent days and fenced off for renovation work. It’s currently unclear if the explosion is related to the construction. No injuries were reported at this time, and neighboring buildings did not appear to have sustained any damage.
This gas station is located just under a block away from the location where a Waymo vehicle killed KitKat, a beloved neighborhood bodega cat. Both incidents share a commonality: the dangers posed by the automobile extend beyond the driver’s seat.
