Nearly six years ago I broke the exciting news right here on this very blog that Randa’s Market, the hole in the wall liquor store next to Roxie Theater, had adopted a cat.
During the years since, KitKat — who I later learned was a “he” despite one employee’s initial insistence to the contrary — became somewhat of a sentinel not just of the store, but keeping the dogs on their toes at neighboring businesses as well.
KitKat’s ascerbic nature made him the perfect fit with the oft intoxicated folks who congregate in the vicinity, shooting death stares when he wanted treats and just generally not putting up with anyone’s bullshit.
But he also liked a little attention now and then, particularly having his cheeks scratched.
Sadly, KitKat passed away on Monday after being murdered by a Waymo vehicle. Over the past week a memorial sprung up around the tree outside the bodega, with cards, photos, Halloween decor, and (naturally) KitKat bars.
RIP KitKat. You will be missed.
