16th Mission Bart treepocalypse 2011

May 18th, 2011

No more tree

Sadly, the tree at the drug emporium Bart station on 16th and Mission has been removed. This tree has seen much action over the years, from concerts, to shooting up, to commuters, to meth smoking, to poetry slams. Your shade will be missed. by many, tree.

What the fuck is this??

What the fuck is this??

I’m inclined to agree with the vandal here: what the fuck is this mystery box attached to the light pole? It doesn’t seem to have any wires sticking out. If it’s electric it must have a battery… or maybe it’s using one of those wireless power things like in an electric toothbrush charger.

Or maybe it’s just an empty plastic box.

Regardless, the box is a mystery. Do you know what it is? Drop me a line. Otherwise I might have to go out there with a screwdriver and find out the hard way.

This may be the best ad on the side of a truck I’ve ever seen.

Bowling car

May 13th, 2011

On my way to Four Barrel, I came across this rather, um, unusual bowling-themed art car. It was a little Fiat with bowling pins that went in and out of the side of the car.

I wasn’t able to find the owner, but of course he showed up and immediately drove away while I was getting coffee. D’oh!

Anyway, I imagine he wouldn’t be to happy if I’d thrown a bowling ball at his lovely car, but it was rather tempting.

Civet poop in my coffee cup

Recently, Vic Wong of MissionMission was kind enough to invite a few of us over to taste Kopi Luwak, a type of coffee that’s consumed by a civet and, well — shat out — before it’s consumed as coffee.

I can’t say I particularly enjoyed the taste, but you can read more about this over at MissionMission.

Project Rainbow at Little Roxie

May 4th, 2011

“Project Rainbow” is an art installation in the window of Little Roxie on 16th and Valencia. A mannequin reaches out to television sets displaying mysterious images while wading in a sea of candy. Weird!

No H&M?

No H&M?

H&M is cheap, sure; but it’s also low-quality and their clothes tend to fall apart really fast. I guess that’s why Berkeley has this sign.

Estraberis are back!

May 2nd, 2011

Estraberies

You might recall the favorite fruit of Spaniglish-speakers everywhere, the estraberi showing up at Loma Produce last year.

Well thanks to this photo by Alexia Anthem, we can see that estraberis have returned to Loma Produce for 2011!
