{"id":8669,"date":"2019-09-13T03:29:44","date_gmt":"2019-09-13T03:29:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mrericsir.com\/blog\/?p=8669"},"modified":"2023-07-11T17:07:26","modified_gmt":"2023-07-11T17:07:26","slug":"the-emperor-norton-plaque-is-back","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.mrericsir.com\/blog\/local\/the-emperor-norton-plaque-is-back\/","title":{"rendered":"The Emperor Norton plaque is back"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/mrericsir\/48724633378\/in\/dateposted\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/48724633378_28a323d71f_z.jpg\" alt=\"Emperor Norton plaque\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those who visited the old Transbay Terminal before it was demolished may remember the plaque dedicated to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Emperor_Norton\">Emperor Norton<\/a> next to the front door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The plaque reads:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pause traveler<br>and be grateful to<br>Norton 1st,<br>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Emperor of the United States<br>Protector of Mexico, 1859-80,<br>whose prophetic wisdom<br>conceived and decreed the<br>bridging of San Francisco Bay<br>August 18 1869<br>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dedicated by E Clampus Vitus, Feb 25th, 1939<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Recently the plaque was <a href=\"https:\/\/sfist.com\/2019\/09\/10\/photos-80-year-old-emperor-norton-plaque-unveiled-at-the-salesforce-transit-center\/\">restored and installed at the new Salesforce Transit Center<\/a>, the replacement for the Transbay Terminal. The plaque was restored by the de Young museum, naturally by a current member of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/E_Clampus_Vitus\">E Clampus Vitus<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All the rust was carefully removed and it now looks nearly as good as new. It&#8217;s located next to bus bay 7 inside the transit center, where it won&#8217;t have to weather the elements nearly as much as before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A plaque next to it recalls the history of the Norton plaque when it was relocated from the Cliff House to the Transbay Terminal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/mrericsir\/48724632018\/in\/dateposted\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/48724632018_0f5efb12d4.jpg\" alt=\"Emperor Norton plaque\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This second plaque reads:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This plaque re-located and re-dedicated on the 50th anniversary of the bridge envisioned by Emperor Norton<br>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And so recorded by E Clampus Vitus Nov. 11, 5991 (1986)<br>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yerba Buena Chapter 1<br>Joaquin Murrieta Chapter 13<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For many more details on the history of this plaque, see <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emperorsbridge.org\/blog\/2018\/11\/9\/emperor-norton-plaque-restored-new-site-eyed\">this blog post from The Emperor&#8217;s Bridge Campaign.<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Those who visited the old Transbay Terminal before it was demolished may remember the plaque dedicated to Emperor Norton next to the front door.
