{"id":8528,"date":"2019-07-08T00:03:57","date_gmt":"2019-07-08T00:03:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mrericsir.com\/blog\/?p=8528"},"modified":"2023-07-12T04:28:06","modified_gmt":"2023-07-12T04:28:06","slug":"cyclisk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.mrericsir.com\/blog\/local\/cyclisk\/","title":{"rendered":"Cyclisk"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/mrericsir\/48226200661\/in\/dateposted\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/48226200661_98538d01d1_z.jpg\" alt=\"Cyclisk\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Easily the strangest thing I saw on this trip was the &#8220;Cyclisk,&#8221; an obelisk <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atlasobscura.com\/places\/cyclisk\">made of around 340 damaged bicycles.<\/a> It was created by Mark Grieve and Ilana Spector as a public art project for Santa Rosa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ironically the statue is next to a car dealer and a car wash, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/2010\/09\/bicycle-obelisk\">Grieve says &#8220;The statement is up to the viewer.&#8221;<\/a> I&#8217;d also point out there are no bike lanes anywhere near the statue, and the street it&#8217;s located is even missing a sidewalk just north of it. So the meaning seems pretty clear&#8230; or is it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If the nearby streets were rearranged with <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Complete_streets\">complete streets<\/a> in mind, it would give the statue a <em>completely<\/em> different meaning.
