Everyone who lives here knows that. There&#8217;s even a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.7x7.com\/\">magazine<\/a> named after this fact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Problem is, it&#8217;s not exactly true.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the <em>land <\/em>area is about 49 square miles, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/San_Francisco#Geography\">as Wikipedia points out<\/a> the total area is a much larger 232 square miles when you include water. Aside from a sizable portion of the bay and some of its islands, San Francisco also includes the Farallon Islands and surrounding water in the Pacific.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The city&#8217;s actual borders are easy to visualize <a href=\"http:\/\/www.openstreetmap.org\/relation\/111968\">using OpenStreetMap<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mrericsir.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sfboundary.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"442\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mrericsir.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sfboundary-1024x442.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2802\" title=\"Boundaries of SF\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mrericsir.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sfboundary-1024x442.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.mrericsir.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sfboundary-300x129.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.mrericsir.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sfboundary.jpg 1346w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In case you&#8217;re wondering where OpenStreetMap is getting this data, it&#8217;s straight from the US Census <a href=\"http:\/\/tigerweb.geo.census.gov\/\">TIGER data<\/a>. The same information can be viewed on their website, albeit with some difficulty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One more thing: (Spoiler alert!) Despite what many seem to think, SFO is not located in San Francisco; it&#8217;s entirely in San Mateo County. So if you&#8217;re ever wondering why the airport doesn&#8217;t have SF&#8217;s trademark urine, pot, and beer smell, that&#8217;s probably why.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>San Francisco is seven by seven miles.
