{"id":2129,"date":"2012-09-22T21:00:44","date_gmt":"2012-09-22T21:00:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mrericsir.com\/blog\/?p=2129"},"modified":"2024-11-07T00:42:17","modified_gmt":"2024-11-07T00:42:17","slug":"white-iphone-spotted-in-1987-film-robocop","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.mrericsir.com\/blog\/film\/white-iphone-spotted-in-1987-film-robocop\/","title":{"rendered":"White iPhone spotted in 1987 film RoboCop"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a previous post, I pointed out what appears to be a white iPhone 4 or 4S model <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mrericsir.com\/blog\/film\/white-iphone-spotted-in-1993\/\">in a 1993 Star Trek episode.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Turns out the white iPhone design dates back even earlier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here&#8217;s a frame of the 1987 film RoboCop, approximately 30 minutes in to the film.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mrericsir.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/robocop-iphone-3.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"166\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mrericsir.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/robocop-iphone-3-300x166.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2133\" title=\"RoboCop GPS\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mrericsir.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/robocop-iphone-3-300x166.png 300w, https:\/\/www.mrericsir.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/robocop-iphone-3.png 730w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It&#8217;s described as a handheld mapping device. While it may not look much like an iPhone at first glance, notice the dimensions and how it&#8217;s held with a portrait orientation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But there&#8217;s more to it than that. Much more:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mrericsir.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/robocop-iphone.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"170\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mrericsir.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/robocop-iphone-300x170.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2131\" title=\"iPhone in RoboCop\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mrericsir.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/robocop-iphone-300x170.png 300w, https:\/\/www.mrericsir.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/robocop-iphone.png 711w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the above frame, approximately 1:08 into the film, we see Dick Jones (played by Ronny Cox) holding a different version of the RoboCop tracking device.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Immediately after, we see a POV shot of this second model:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mrericsir.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/robocop-iphone-2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"707\" height=\"396\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mrericsir.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/robocop-iphone-2.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2130\" title=\"POV shot of iPhone in RoboCop\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mrericsir.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/robocop-iphone-2.png 707w, https:\/\/www.mrericsir.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/robocop-iphone-2-300x168.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 707px) 100vw, 707px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Notice anything iPhone-like about this?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No, not the crappy iOS 6 maps. I meant the rectangular portrait shape and rounded corners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thankfully, Apple&#8217;s patent on physical shapes <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/dr-r-keith-sawyer\/apple-wins-patent-case_b_1834603.html\">was invalidated,<\/a> ensuring the future of Omni Consumer Product&#8217;s line of cyborg police officers won&#8217;t involve patent infringement.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In a previous post, I pointed out what appears to be a white iPhone 4 or 4S model in a 1993 Star Trek episode.
