I don’t make it out to Stonestown Galleria<\/a> — the mall on the west side of the city — very often these days. But when I do shop at Stonestown I’m always surprised at how much it’s changed since I lived out there. Gone are the Macy’s and Nordstrom, now there’s a Target and a Whole Foods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What really puts Stonestown on the map in 2025 are the food and entertainment options. And at Kura Revolving Sushi Bar<\/a> you get a little of both.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the front of the restaurant is a large touchscreen prompting you to enter your phone number and party size to get on the waitlist. (I’m told this can also be done via the app.) As soon as your table is ready you’ll receive a text.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Each table has a touchscreen and two conveyor belts. Orders can be placed on the touchscreen or via the app. The lower belt features sushi and appetizers moving continuously throughout the restaurant and you an grab a plate as it goes by — just like a typical sushi boat place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The upper “express” belt is for items prepared on demand like fried food, soup, etc. These zip straight over to your table.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And then there’s the robot server. This R2D2-sized droid brings over condiments and beverages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As for my experience it was a mixed bag. The ordering touchscreen is kind of glitchy and not particularly user friendly. I probably should have used the app.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The conveyor belts and robot server all worked fine. One thing that gave me a bit of an “ick” factor is that you have to slide your used sushi plates into a slot, which obviously just drops down into a dish tray inside a cabinet. I tried not to think about how often (read: rarely) something like that would get thoroughly cleaned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
