New mural

This space is reserved...

A mural recently appeared on the side of the former Andalu space at 16th and Guerrero. Apparently there’s more to come, as a large sign proclaims that the space is “reserved.” Stay tuned for further updates as the mural progresses.

UPDATE: A new piece of the mural has appeared.

UPDATE, part 2: Despite being aggressively tagged over in the past few days, the mural sprung back into action with more cutesy characters.

UPDATE, part 3: Well, that didn’t last.

17th & Capp Mural

For the past few weeks, the building on the corner of 17th and Capp (across from Uptown) has been getting muralized. Surprisingly it hasn’t been tagged (yet.)

While it’s not finished, it’s nice to see some color at a corner that’s more known for a different type of “color,” i.e. the kind where a Royal Gate-drinking hobo pees on your shoes.

Does BoingBoing coverage confirm San Francisco street art no longer hip?

Mural at 19th and Mission

There was a time when BoingBoing was an underground zine, and being covered in its pages meant you were an up-and-coming phenomenon. Now that BoingBoing is the 11th most popular blog on the internet, your grandmother is probably reading it. Nothing diminishes the cool factor more quickly than when uncool people know about it.

With this in mind, has street art in San Francisco finally jumped the shark into non-hip status with recent coverage of the superhero mural at 19th and Mission?

Or will local street art survive such deserved (but unnecessary) praise and maintain its local cred?

Guess who’s back?

No, not Eminem. Pica Pica’s tiger! Yes, a new mural featuring a big orange tiger has shown up on the side of Pica Pica sometime over the weekend.

Goodbye, tiger.

You know that fantastic mural of a tiger on 15th and Valencia? The one on the side of Pica Pica?

Well, it’s gone.

What happened to the tiger?!
Sad day indeed. Goodbye, tiger.

UPDATE: Walked by today, saw this. Don’t get me wrong, this is obviously skilled work; but it’s really generic compared to what was there before.

Mural of Lone Star Swan

As long as we’re on the topic of 16th Street’s favorite pigeon feeder, there’s a mural of the guy over on Clarion Alley that you should check out.

Actually, you should check out Clarion Alley in general. The murals tend not to last too long there, which is both a blessing and a curse. But the quality and creativity is outstanding.
