What is it a nice day for?

September 4th, 2016

It's a nice day...

Near 24th and Folsom I encountered the above pull-tag flyer, which sports an old photo of Billy Idol along with the heading “It’s a nice day.” The pull-tags include the following phrases:

  • To start again
  • For a white wedding

If you’ve somehow never encountered the 1982 hit song this is referencing, here’s the music video for your enjoyment. Have a nice day!

Some love song titles

I Love You Lots

Are you a songwriter? Are you incredibly lazy? Good. This blog post is for you.

As a songwriter you probably have too many things to worry about — like making your songs sound good — to worry about the lyrics. Fortunately that’s why love songs were invented: you can just say some general things about love, or even about a previous relationship. If you’re lucky some people will like your love song and play it at their wedding. Then those sweet, sweet royalty checks come flowing in!

Now that you’ve spent three minutes writing the lyrics to your love song, you must come up with a title. D’oh! Titles are tricky. Fortunately I’ve already come up with a few that you can use, all for free. Yes!

  • Love To Love You
  • I Lovingly Love You
  • Love 2: More Love
  • The Lovely Kind of Love
  • I Actually Hate How Much I Love You
  • Unlike David Lee Roth, I Am Talkin’ ‘Bout Love
  • I Fucking Love The Shit Out of You, Bitch
  • Don’t Make Me Come Over There and Love You
  • Love, Love, & Love. Also, Love
  • I Am Legally Obligated to Inform You That My Love is So Strong It’s Classified as Carcinogenic Under California Proposition 65

See? You’re almost done now; the hard part is deciding which of these fabulous titles to use! Incredible.

Handwritten song lyrics taped to pole

Hope There's Someone lyrics

I’m not entirely certain what compels someone to write out the lyrics to the 2005 hit Hope There’s Someone by Antony and the Johnsons, then tape the page to a pole in a BART station. Perhaps they were inspired by the recent Avicii version?

In all likelihood we’ll never know. It will remain as one of the unsolved mysteries of our time, just like that wooden box.

Green Day sells out

July 23rd, 2012

Green Day banana chips

Remember when Green Day’s pop-friendly rock took over the airwaves in the mid 90′s? Well, times have changed. Billie, Mike, and Tre must have fallen on bad luck, as they’re now licensing their band’s name out for banana chips.

If you want to be an American Idiot and try these yourself, they’re sold at Walgreens.

Yet another punk show at 16th Mission Bart

June 17th, 2011

Yesterday evening we had another little punk show at the 16th Mission Bart stop. Unlike many previous shows, this one was right in the middle of things; not much buffer zone between the audience and the band.

I wasn’t there when they finished up, but I hear that things ended quite early.

Run DMC on Reading Rainbow

May 18th, 2010

While we’re on the subject of hip hop and filling our blog with embedded YouTube videos, did you know Run DMC was once on Reading Rainbow?

But you don’t have to take my word for it.

My only complaint is that Jordi LeVar Burton didn’t rap along with them. It could have been something like this:

Yo I like books
I like to read

Read a lot
If you want to succeed

Reading is smart
It makes you wiser
It’s hard to see
Without my VISOR

(Clearly I should quit my day job and become a rap lyricist.)

Insane Clown Posse parody on SNL

April 29th, 2010

SNL really nailed a parody of Insane Clown Posse’s latest video, “Miracles.”

But first, in the unlikely event you haven’t seen the Miracles video, here it is for reference.

Fuckin’ magnets… how do they work?

Okay, here’s SNL’s version.

Uncle Outrage

October 28th, 2009

Recently I went to order a couple albums from Uncle Outrage on their website. But the link didn’t work. it wasn’t my lucky day… or was it?

Chinchila Album + Dance Extreme

But first, WTF is Uncle Outrage? I’d describe UO as musically similar to Mindless Self Indulgence or gONNA gET gOT, but more mellow than either of those, and in many ways more listenable. The lyrics cover an odd range of topics — sexuality, anime, old-school video games, etc. Atypical in many ways.

I first heard about UO on Soulseek, a P2P music sharing program, many years ago. Someone hooked me up with the song “Octopus Angel” and I loved it. Now that I have a job, I figure I should support independent music that I enjoy since I can actually, you know, afford to.

So when the order link didn’t work, I sent an e-mail about the broken order page and we got my order straightened out. Nils included an autographed photo for my troubles with a note on the back. Check it out yo:

Morals of the story:

  • If a website is broken, always send the webmaster an e-mail. Always.

  • Uncle Outrage is awesome and you should give them a listen.
